The Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) consists of seven orchestras that range from absolute beginners to the most advanced players.
Three orchestras make up the Symphony
Orchestra Program. These orchestras are
for woodwind, brass, percussion and string students. The
Symphony Orchestra Programs include:
Each season the students from the Symphony Orchestra Program
are also eligible to join the Chamber
Music Program.
Four orchestras make up the String
Program for violin, viola, cello and string
bass students. The String Programs orchestras include:
- Beginning Strings Ensemble (BSE)
- Intermediate Strings Ensemble (ISE)
- String Orchestra Ensemble (SOE)
- Concert String Orchestra (CSO)
During the summer months, HYS conducts two outreach programs:
- Summer Strings geared toward elementary school students, and
- Pacific Music Institute (PMI) for middle- and high-school students from all islands of Hawaii, the mainland, and the Asia/Pacific region.
