Why Listen & Learn?

In 2019, we launched our vision of making music a right, not a privilege. In our islands, very few schools have robust instrumental music programs, and in many areas, public schools do not have music programs at all. 

The goal of our nonprofit organization is to partner with schools and community organizations across the islands, bringing music education to areas where it is needed. Music education is crucial to success in school and joy in life, and we believe that it should not only be available in privileged areas in Hawaiʻi.

Listen & Learn community concerts are an opportunity for our students to hone their performance skills, as well as to share their passion for playing their instrument. Our students travel to schools teaching younger students about orchestral music and inspiring them to get involved with HYS or in an instrumental music program available to them.

This year, since we are not able to travel, our virtual Listen & Learn concerts will be spread through a variety of media platforms, such as social media and local TV. Please enjoy, watch, share, and help us achieve our mission of helping youth develop to their fullest potential through orchestral music in the setting of our Islands’ unique culture.
