Hawaii Youth Symphony

Spring 2021 Newsletter

Highlights in this issue:

  • We have big news – everyone’s favorite summer music camp is back! After much thought and planning, we’ve reinvented the Pacific Music Institute for 2021 to be a safe, hybrid summer music program. Small in-person ensembles will meet at the spacious Hawaii Convention Center, and we will also have online instruction through our new PMI+ platform.
  • Adapting HYS classes this past year inspired us to continue using Zoom to bring together our music community. Online platforms opened up greater opportunities for our students, and we were able to keep many of our HYS traditions alive!
  • As we collectively move into a brighter spring, HYS is delighted to welcome two distinguished artists into our Hawaii Youth Symphony Ohana—Noel Okimoto and Michael Lim.

  • Our free Listen & Learn community concerts are one of our favorite HYS traditions. They are an opportunity for our students to demonstrate what their instrument can do, and inspire a younger generation of students to participate in music education. In this issue, we connect with horn player Kailyn Isobe!
  • And much more!
